My buddy’s bachelor party was suppose to be down in Miami last April. Things obviously were cancelled, so we improvised. A small group of 5 decided to do something a little more local and less expensive. So we decided on Cedar Point.
All photos were taken from Reddit or google except for the one that I am in
We stayed at their resort cabins at Lighthouse Point. There’s an array of small to medium sized cabins walking distance to the park. There are also powered camp sites for RVs and trailers too. Really neat place.
5 of us found a way to fit comfortably. One on each pull out couch, two upstairs in the crawlspace, and the bachelor got the master bedroom. Charcoal grill, microwave, and a college style mini fridge is all the amenities you really get. Shower is small, but my oversized body was able to clean up in it.
There are a handful of bars and restaurants on the resort, as well as convenience stores if you forgot to pack a few things. So you really do not need to leave the resort and check out downtown Sandusky.
The Covid protocols were easy to follow. At check in, all guests had to complete a health questionnaire saying you are free of symptoms and contact. After that, each guest gets their temperature checked in a facial scan type of program. That gets you clear for the rest of the weekend. This is really convenient, because other guests of the park must walk through covered tents to do the same upon entering the park for the day. Guests of the lodges get to enter through another entrance without having to go through the protocol again.
Since the park is only open on Saturday and Sunday for the rest of the season, it really bottle necks the crowds to those two days. There was a decent sized crowd right at the opening of the park, but not as packed as a regular Cedar Point weekend. Lines were deceivingly long. There were 6ft spots along every ride line. And the rides were only filled to half capacity. And after a group rides the ride, they spray down all of the seats and handles, and run the ride empty to air it out. So even if the lines were half as crowded as normal, the wait time is just as long. Masks are required throughout the park (even on rides) unless you are eating or drinking. And they had employees everywhere monitoring while constantly cleaning hand rails and other points of contact.
To help with line sizes, Cedar Point issues “Access Passes” for the popular rides. Twice per day at the ride entrance, you have to wait in another line to receive this pass that tells you what hour range you can enter the line for the ride. Although I get the intention of it, this prevents our group from being able to hit all of the popular rides we wanted. This is definitely a two day ordeal if you want to hit all of the rides you want. On top of that, most of the carnival games they normally have were closed for Covid safety as well.
The big ride we hit was the Top Thrill Dragster. For those unfamiliar, you sit down in a race car looking coaster. It then propels you from 0-120 in 4 seconds. Shoots up a tall turn, and returns you to the ground. It’s short, but oh man it is awesome. I’ve never experienced an acceleration like that.
If you really need a weekend out, I’d recommend staying on the resort at Cedar Point. People kept their distances and obliged with the mask policy a lot better than I expected. We only hit about half of the rides we wanted to hit, so I recommend this being a two day ordeal. I’d love to come back when the protocols are reduced, and fast passes are accessible again (they were all sold out)
Enjoy me and my buddy ridding on the MAGNUM XL200. Apologies for the nose penises, the masks will shift mid ride.

Looked like an awesome weekend, but holy hell that Thrill Dragster ride got me nervous from just watching the video.
I’m not a huge coasters guy, never have been, but if I do get on a coaster because of peer pressure or as an attempt to impress a girl or some other third reason I hate every second of it. I scream, I swear, I complain as we’re waiting in line, and then when we get off I have serious regrets.
Congrats to your buddy though, I’m glad you all found a way to make the celebration count (in a safe and socially distanced way).

I thought I was prepared for it, but oh man I was wrong. There’s a reason they do not start the ride until everyone’s arms are down.
I’ll scream and swear too, but I love em. All except any direct drop ones like the Giant Drop at Six Flags Great America. Nope. Never again.

They have the same thing Six Flags Atlanta. Won’t do that one, either.

Did you get to do Millennium Force?

That one was a 3 hour wait....for the access pass. That was clearly the most popular one in the park, so we decided to hit other rides instead of spend half our day in a line.

That sucks. It’s an excellent ride.

Id say the drop on millennium is worst but waiting to go in dragster is definitely the worst part.

We did 4 days at Disney last month and there was only 1 line that was about an hour long and a couple that were 35 to 45 minutes . All the other rides were either no line or 10 to 15 minutes. From reading your article I think the biggest difference was they really weren’t wiping down the rides that often, maybe once every 15 minutes. If they had to do it after every group I'm sure it would slow it down. Oh, and no fastpasses, everyone had to wait in the same line.

Good thing is I live an hour away, so I could make a day out of it next season.

I think that was the case for CP in regards to the fast passes. They were unavailable online, and when searching the web for any alternatives, people were selling theirs on eBay for hundreds of dollars. I assume they dropped em for the rest of the season, and season ticket holders were selling them

The most intense rolle r coaster I’ve been on to date was the Rockin’ Roller Coaster at Disney and I can confirm what ChevytoMazda said... waiting is the hardest part...

I haven’t rode that for almost 15 years. Man I should go back to Disney. Last time I hit Disney I did a lot of drinking and a lot less riding.

Well, if you make it down here sometime next year I’d love to see ya (after next year I have no idea where I’ll be. College will be done, I’ll find a job somewhere, who knows).
